Rep. Clyburn: Obama‘s Problems Are ’Because of the Color of His Skin’ | The Blaze

If you ask Rep. James Clyburn, the number three Democrat in the House, what he thinks about the president’s possibly tough re-election prospects next year, he won‘t talk about the president’s controversial speeches, decisions, or even gaffes. Instead, he‘ll talk about the president’s skin color.

“You know, I’m 70 years old,” he told McClatchy Newspapers. “And I can tell you; people don’t like to deal with it, but the fact of the matter is, the president’s problems are in large measure because of the color of his skin.”

“When he sees his face being put on a chimpanzee’s body; do you think he didn’t see that?” Clyburn asked, referring to a local GOP leader in California who forwarded an e-mail depicting Obama as a chimpanzee. “And I suspect they send the same faxes to his office they send to mine.”

He then went on to suggest the birther movement was grounded in racism.

“I don‘t know why anybody didn’t ask for John McCain’s” birth certificate, Clyburn said. “He wasn’t even born in this country.”

McCain, for the record, was born on a Naval base in the Panama Canal Zone.

And if you‘re wondering how Clyburn turned a discussion of the president’s re-election into a discussion of supposed threats against Clyburn, so was the McClatchy reporter. So he asked. And he got a response.

“We have the same skin color,” he said, “that’s how it relates to him.”
