PARMA, Ohio - During a meeting on Wednesday, the superintendent of the Parma City School District recommended keeping all three high schools open.
But Dr. Jeffery Graham wants to close four to five elementary schools, including Lt. Col. John Glenn Elementary, Pearl Road Elementary, James E. Hanna Elementary and State Road Elementary.
Renwood Elementary could close, depending on kindergarten enrollment.
Parma Schools are facing desperate financial times and face fiscal emergency if voters don't approve a tax levy on the ballot in May.
Under Graham's plan, the three high schools would house grades 8 through 12, however 8th graders would be segregated from the rest of the population.
Graham said the plan has the lowest up front costs and realizes the greatest savings over five years.
But Tracy Bates, whose 6th grade son would be one of those 8th graders in high school, doesn't like the plan. "I don't think 8th graders belong with12th graders," she said. "They're too young."
The school board will have the final say on the plan.
