All of America celebrates the death of Al Qaeda leader and 9/11 mastermind Usama bin Laden. The elusive terrorist managed to flee from the pursuit of the U.S. military for 10 years, finally succumbing to various serious physical maladies, which forced him to hole up in a mansion just outside Islamabad in Pakistan. Early reports indicated that he was so seriously ill that he began to suffer from dementia, and believed that he was some sort of rich king or prince in Pakistan.
U.S. forces under the direction of General David Patraeus discovered where bin Laden was staying and conducted a military operation that resulted in the terrorist's death.
General Patraeus and the U.S. military deserve the accolades, the thanks and appreciation that is fitting for such a stunning feat.
While Americans have every right to celebrate and to savor the victory over the man who ordered the murder of 3000 citizens on September 11, 2001, troubling facts linger concerning bin Laden's death. At least five troubling facts arise with regard to the demise of the leader of the most dangerous terrorist organization in the world.
One, the United States is now in great peril. The American government knows all too well the mindset of groups such as Al Qaeda. No matter what atrocities it commits, retaliation is always viewed as the automatic response to attempts by victims to get back at those who perpetrate such mayhem. There is no such thing as 'tit for tat' in the world of terrorist states and organizations. America's retaliation against Al Qaeda only invites more terrorism in the thinking of the terrorists, creating a catch-22 for the United States. Whether we respond to atrocities or not, terrorists will use either as yet another reason to attack.
Last evening when the announcement was made that bin Laden was dead, a communique was issued over the news wires that urged all world governments to be on high alert, given that Al Qaeda and other Islamist terrorist groups are expected to attempt to conduct acts of mayhem against the free world, particularly the U.S. and its citizens who live in countries overseas.
Word has been issued today that the U.S. military is on high alert.
Two, Barack Obama said nothing of these facts when he made the announcement of bin Laden's death last evening. To be fair, sometimes leaders refrain from such statements in order to avoid unnecessarily alarming the general public. But the truth is that the U.S. is now in more danger of a major terrorist attack than at any other time since 9/11. The President should have felt it absolutely necessary to warn citizens to be on high alert and to take prudent precautions. This did not happen.
Three, not only did Obama fail to make a statement concerning the most important element arising out of bin Laden's death, but he flagrantly snubbed former President George W. Bush and took credit for bin Laden's death himself. None of what took place in Pakistan would have been possible were it not for the groundwork laid by Bush and the U.S. military. And it is no small fact that when the U.S. began the 'war on terror' after 9/11, one Senator Barack Obama opposed it every step of the way. Yet now he presumes to take credit for the operation. Such a display was no doubt one of the most embarrassing moments in American history, not to mention that it once again placed the Obama arrogance on center stage.
Four, Obama claimed that he had made it a priority of his Presidency to get Usama bin Laden, as if this were not a priority before his ascension to the White House. In fact, the top priority of the Bush Administration was to get bin Laden. But Obama worded the statement in such as way as to imply that such a priority was made only when he took the Oval Office. Such a statement is a blatant untruth.
Five, the President and the Administration owed it to the American public to show bin Laden's body publicly in order to lay to rest any possible conspiracy theories arising out of the incident. This they did not do, with reports surfacing today that the military had buried bin Laden at sea last night at approximately 3 A.M. Thus, conspiracy theorists are, in fact, having a field day with the entire scenario. And perhaps rightly so. The manner in which the Administration handled the whole thing does nothing but invite conspiracy theories due to the numerous unanswered questions about the operation.
It would have been much better for Americans to see the body.
