Today I have to say that in a way I'm embarrassed to be an American for the simple reason of how we are now being portrayed on the global stage by our so called political leaders in Washington DC. We have the
republicans calling for massive cuts in the budget, yet for weeks now they cave to the petty demands of the democrats. We Have the democrats now acting like a bunch of spoiled children...like the spoiled teenager from Beverly Hills with daddy's credit card...refusing to accept any serious budget cuts. Then we have the current administration just sitting there looking lost and disinterested while all of this is going on. Now Friday is here and the possibility of a government shutdown is very real. However is a government shutdown as bad as the talking heads in the mainstream media claiming it to be?
If the government shutdown late on Friday most Americans won't even notice unless they watch the news. After all the average government agency isn't open on the weekends. Not to mention the fact that essential personnel like the post office, the military, air traffic controllers, etc. will still be on the job. People will still get their mail and be able to travel so any inconveniences like that won't happen thus our daily lives are not interrupted and we won't directly feel any ill effects. I predict that if this happens and the government stays shut down it will be the delay in tax return checks that will cause uproar with the American people way before anything else will.
On the downside however you can't help but worry for our military. Granted they will be deemed essential and will stay on the job, but the question of their pay and possibly they well need supplies being cut off still goes without a definite answer. Right now with troops stationed in the still shaky Iraq, fighting a war in Afghanistan, and now being the military puppets of the UN in Libya is this something we really want to happen? How will this affect their moral? Honestly to me this is the only downside to the whole shutdown mess!
