Well it seems that after a few days the UN military strikes on Libya spearheaded by of course the United States military have been successful…so far. TO be fair France and England are also involved on behave of the UN, but who’s ships launched the attack? Libya’s air defense systems have been damaged and even Muammer al-Qaddafi's private compound has been hit. Operation Odyssey Dawn has been a success in it’s initial strikes so it seems…or did the UN using the US military as muscle just kick a hornet’s nest? Qaddafi has since come out to say that his loyal supporters will serve as human shields, that he is opening up the arms storage and arming everyone that supports him to the teeth, and openly called on other Muslim nations to rise up with him against the westerners that seek to destroy him. Now France has come out and said that this operation is far from over. Far from over?
It is my understanding that these attacks on Libya were to assure their compliance to the “no-fly” zone they declared over Libya to help curb the mass murder of those rising up in protest against their arguably insane leader. If their air defenses are crippled then no what? Does the UN sit back and wait like a police officer on the side of the road making sure the law is followed? I doubt that. Our military forces will continue to attack and eventually get dragged into an all out war with Libya…at least that’s the worst case scenario I suspect will happen.
Now don’t get me wrong I’m not against helping the rebels out that are being slaughtered like defenseless cattle. I understand the humanitarian angle of all of this…I get it. You see that is what makes America great and part of the reason why we are so hated by tyrants and dictators around the world. America has values and fights to defend freedom and liberty all over the world. It is our duty to do so. Despite our problems we are still a great nation and one must not forget the heart and soul of what made this country great….that’s freedom. It IS our duty to help those oppressed by violent tyrants that have no sense of value for human life. That’s not my issue here. Even that trumps the anger I have surrounding the UN using the United States of America whenever it wants to enforce their laughable agendas.
My concern here can be broken down into two issues. I’ll start with my secondary concern first. I don’t trust Obama plain and simple. While he’s off playing soccer in Rio, our men and women in the military are once again putting their lives on the line for something that wasn’t properly explained to us. Is this just a simple military action formed by the United Nations, or is that an excuse to launch us into another war in a part of the world that has been at war with each other since the dawn of time it seems? Is this war? This is a question not only the American people are asking, but Congress as well. Even they don’t have a clear precise idea of what is going on here. You see Mr. President if this is some backdoor way of yours to go to war then you have just committed treason! After all you need Congress’ approval for that and it seems you don’t have it. I’m not going in that direction just yet, I just want better answers…just enough of the facts that will not jeopardize our men and women in the military. Something that makes me go “okay I can support this”. Seriously I want to support this overall it is the right thing to do, but right now there are too many questions and too much doubt on true intentions here.
My main concern can be broken down into two parts. Money….can we afford this? I’m all for less government spending and budget cuts, maybe not so much in the military sector, but enough to help kill some of this debt. We all know how politicians work. They cut spending in the dumbest places…in places that hurt Americans like military spending. How can we sustain the safety of our men and women fighting if we cannot afford to do so? Can the current military budgets handle another battlefield in the Middle East. That leads me to my first and foremost concern…we have spread ourselves too thin. We have Iraq which we haven’t pulled out of completely yet. Then we are fighting in Afghanistan. Now a full blown war is on the horizon in Libya…just how big does Obama think our military is. If we are spread out too thin like we are there are too many factors at play that makes it very dangerous for those serving. Our top military minds are focusing on multiple wars thus leaving the door open for too many life threatening mistakes. When the going gets tough do we have enough military might to provide life saving back-up? You see just too many questions.
Now maybe my concerns are un-warranted. Maybe the answer is yes to all of it. Maybe this will just be a small skirmish that won’t drag us into an all out war. Who knows? I’m not a bleeding heart anti-war liberal like Michael Moore or Dennis Kucinich. I’m not a hypocritical conservative like Ron Paul who picks and chooses what wars he justifies based on his personal agenda. I’m just an average American who cares about those in our military and the consequences of our actions around the world. I just want better clarification that’s all. What’s so wrong with that? I guess until we get that clarification there is only one thing we can do…support and pray for all our troops!
